Signing in without leaving the page
Sign in and signup open over whatever you were looking at, and put you back.
Signing in used to navigate you away to a separate page, which meant losing your place and scrolling back to whatever you had been reading. It now opens as a dialog over the current page, so nothing unmounts and your scroll position survives.
The old sign in links still work as real URLs, so emailed links and password resets land where they should.
